Interesting facts & history about Jackaroo Aircraft Limited
✈ Jackaroo Aircraft Limited formed at Thruxton Aerodrome, Hampshire, in 1956 to produce the Thruxton Jackaroo, a four seat cabin biplane conversion of the de Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth.
✈ The first Jackaroo conversion, registered G-AOEX, flew on 2 March 1957. Flight testing demonstrated practical four seat touring while retaining Tiger Moth flying qualities and economical operating costs.
✈ A total of 19 Tiger Moths were converted to Jackaroos. Eighteen aircraft were converted at Thruxton between 1957 and 1959, and one additional aircraft was converted by Rollason Aircraft and Engines at Croydon in 1960.
✈ Early production used a wooden framed canopy, known as the Jackaroo Mk 1. The Mk 3 introduced a metal canopy and provision for wheel brakes, which improved ground handling on hard runways.
✈ A single Jackaroo Mk 2 agricultural variant flew with a hopper or a 60 gallon tank in place of the front seats. The concept proved niche and that airframe returned to Mk 1 configuration.
✈ Jackaroo Aircraft Limited later traded as Paragon Aircraft Ltd in 1961. The type served with private owners and flying schools, including the Wiltshire School of Flying, which operated from Thruxton.
