I learned about flying from that: Keep calm when things get scary!

It was shortly after I’d qualified and I was flying VFR with a family friend. We were in the cruise when suddenly there was a strong, acrid smell in the cockpit. I concluded that there must be an issue with the electrics, so elected to land at the nearest airfield which was just a few minutes south of our position. I was quite inexperienced at the time and remember having to consciously calm myself down, as the fear of the situation caused quite an adrenaline rush. The experience taught me that when something scary happens, it’s sometimes helpful to give your body 10 seconds or so to calm itself down, in order to help you make calmer, more rational decisions that are less influenced by the adrenaline rush you experience when something frightens you.
