What is Gliding?

Put simply, gliding is the art of flying an aircraft without an engine. To achieve this the pilot must find areas of rising air, allowing the glider to climb and extend the flight time. At Trent Valley Gliding Club the gliders are launched by either winch or aerotow.

The club currently has 3 two seater aircraft, 2 single seater aircraft, 1 motor glider and 1 tug aircraft. In addition to it’s own air fleet, TVGC has a range of vehicles for both towing and retrieving gliders alongside a winch and tractor. A number of club members fly their own aircraft and TVGC is able to offer hangarage and trailer storage for gliders.
The origins of the Trent Valley Gliding Club go back to 1965, when 12 members of the Lincolnshire Gliding Club led by the CFI Ziggy Romrig, decided to form a new club. The Lincolnshire Gliding Club was at the time flying along side the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association at RAF Swinderby.

Experience the thrill of a Gliding Experience Flight

It’s a great way to try something new and experience the delights of soaring flight, or maybe you’d just like to take in the view! If you just want to try gliding or are even considering taking up the sport, then a Gliding Experience Flight will be for you. For many of our guests – it is on the bucket list of experiences they want to try, while others become hooked and become experienced pilots.

Depending on the weather, your flight will begin with either a tow behind a powered aircraft to around 2000 feet, or a winch launch to approx 1200 ft. After release from the winch or tow aircraft, your instructor will demonstrate the flying controls and explain how the glider can stay airborne using lift generated by the sun and wind.

Your instructor will also give you the opportunity to fly the glider yourself – it’s not as difficult as you might think. He/she will guide you through with patience and a steady hand. However, you don’t have to take the controls if you don’t want to – you can just sit back and enjoy the view if you prefer. The views are stunning.

If you wish to take photos during your flight you should tell your instructor before the flight commences. Your instructor will advise how you should hold and operate the camera safely. At the launch point we have a small “tea bus” with drinks and snacks available.
