The EASA Private Pilot Licence

The Private Pilot Licence consists of a minimum of 45 hours flight training, consisting of a minimum of 25 hours dual instruction and 10 hours solo flying. In practice, the hours taken to gain sufficient competence frequently exceed the minimum.

The student must be able to demonstrate proficiency in 19 flight exercises before they are put forward for their skill test and also have passed nine written exams and completed a short practical radio telephony course.

The minimum age for starting the course is 14, the student cannot fly solo until the age of 16, and the minimum age for the issue of the PPL is 17. As well as being over the age of 16 before flying solo the student must have passed their Air Law examination which can be sat here at LAC, and have passed a medical examination with an authorised Aero Medical Examiner. We can provide a list of AMEs we use, there are several in the region.

The Light Aircraft Pilot Licence

The LAPL (A) license is a shorter course but a bit more restrictive than the full PPL licence. It can be used throughout Europe, during hours of daylight and in Visual Meteorologicical Weather (VMC) conditions. Unless the licence is upgraded to a PPL (A) an IR rating would not be able to be added to it (like you can with a PPL) however a night rating can be added to it. This license is therefore an option depending on your future plans once you have the license.

The LAPL course is shorter than the PPL, it consists of a minimum of 30 hours flying training consisting of 15 hours dual and 6 hours solo, followed by a flight test. There are 9 written examinations to be completed (exactly the same as the PPL), as well as a short radiotelephony course. Unlike the PPL, the LAPL only requires a LAPL medical which can be carried out by your GP or an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).

Instrument Rating

Before commencing training for the IR(R), the student must have a minimum of 25 hours experience as an aeroplane pilot since applying for the PPL Licence. A minimum of 10 of these 25 hours must be as pilot-in-command including 5 hours of land-away cross-country flights. The remaining 15 hours may be made up of the IR(R) itself. The student must also hold a Radio Telephony Licence.

The CAA state that the IR(R) course should consist of a minimum of 15 hours training in instrument flying with a suitably equipped aeroplane. Not less than 10 of the 15 hours must be flight by sole reference to instruments. In order to apply for your licence, you must further complete a ground examination and also a flight test. Please contact the Flying School for the current prices and fees.

The Night Qualification

The Night Qualification is required before a person can apply for a Commercial Pilot Licence. The course is ideal for those looking to gain a Commercial Licence or a PPL looking to further enhance their skills and try something different!

As we have no lighting here at Barton, we utilise aircraft at Blackpool Airport at very competitive rates. The course is run from November-February, usually over 2 nights. It is a 5 hour course with no written exams. It is not necessary but it is recommended that you have some instrument flying experience before starting the course.

LAC Cessna 172 Flight Simulator

We are proud to announce the arrival of our purpose-built Cessna simulator right here at Barton. Built by Virtual Aerospace, the UK’s largest flight simulator company it is the only one of its kind in the UK.

Why not give someone special a flight simulation experience? They will get to take full control of a light aircraft for themselves and are taken through every aspect from taking off to landing by one of our highly experiences instructors before being presented with a certificate.

Fear of flying and want to see what it’s all about without actually leaving the ground? Sit alongside one of our highly experienced instructors as they show you exactly whats involved in piloting a light aircraft, maybe afterwards you can try the real thing!

Already have a licence and looking to hone your instrument skills, or maybe you’d like to practice your emergency drills? The simulator is available for solo hire from as little as 15 minutes.
