The Nimbus 4DM is a type of high-performance open-class gliders and was manufacturered by Schempp-Hirth Flugzeugbau, based-out of Baden Wurtemmberg in Germany. The Nimbus series are the highest performing gliders manufactured by Schempp-Hirth and first flew in 1990. Since then over 140 have been built. The glider’s wingspan is 26.5 metres, which gives the single seat version of the Nimbus a glide ratio of 60:1 meaning that the aircraft could glide for 60 nautical miles in still air, from a height of 6,000 feet. The 4D is the two-seat version and glide radios are dependant on how the aircraft has been equipped, as well as the weight of the crew. The 4DM is the motorised version of the Nimbus product line and is powered by a Rotax engine. The Nimbus 4DM holds the world record for speed over a 500km distance.
