As Melbourne’s first airport, Essendon Fields Airport has long played an important role in the state’s aviation sector.

Situated on 305 hectares, the airport has two runways, and comprises a significant mix of aviation and non-aviation activities. Since 2001, the airport has undertaken numerous upgrades and is now one of the leading General Aviation and Corporate Jet Airports in Australia.

Essendon Fields Airport provides facilities and services for International and Domestic corporate aircraft, aircraft maintenance, airfreight, aircraft charter and emergency air service providers. Combined, these operators undertake more than 50,000 annual aircraft movements.

Parking & Transport

We’re Melbourne’s City Airport, and make getting around easy with shuttle buses, rental cars and convenient parking options available right at the terminal door.

STARBUS CITY SHUTTLE

Operated by Starbus, a fast and affordable shuttle service is available between Essendon Fields Airport and a number of convenient locations in Melbourne’s CBD.

TAXIS & RIDESHARE

A taxi rank is located outside the main terminal.

UBER

Uber pickup is accepted at EF Airport and the rank is located outside the main terminal building.

LONG & SHORT TERM PARKING

There is ample parking and a variety of parking options on site at Essendon Fields for staff, visitors and customers. Permit Zone, 2 Hour, 90 Mins and 15 Mins, Pay and Display and long term parking opposite Essendon Fields Airport.
Additional outdoor car parking for 24 hours or more is available at the Long Term Car Park, Bristol Street, Essendon Fields (adjacent to the Airport Terminal – Southern end).

HIRE CARS

We have 3 hire car companies located inside the Terminal. To save money and for peace of mind organise your hire car ahead of time.

BUS ROUTE 477

Regular scheduled bus route operating 7 days per week between Broadmeadows and Moonee Ponds. Connects Essendon Fields (English Street) to Essendon Station in approx. 16 minutes via Mt Alexander Road, Keilor Road and Matthews Ave. Departs every 20 minutes during peak hour. There are two bus stops located on English Street, one on the EF Central side and one beside Linfox.

TRAM TO CITY

Tram service 59 is a ten minute walk from the terminal via Bristol Street. Stop 56 (Airport West) is located on Matthews Ave / Earl Street. Departs every 8 minutes.

Airport Operations

AIRSIDE ACCESS

Entry to airside through the pedestrian and vehicle access gates at Essendon Fields Airport is controlled through the issue of access fobs and gate remotes. Airport operators or contractors with an operational need to access the airside areas of the airport can apply for an access fob or gate remote using the Airside Access Application Form.

Applicants are required to complete the online Airside Induction training prior to the issue or renewal of their airside access fob, key or gate remote. This training must be completed every 2 years to remain valid.

AIRPORT INDUCTION

Essendon Airport Pty Ltd (EAPL) and Essendon Fields Pty Ltd (EFPL) require certain people who are working at the airport to undertake induction programmes. There are two inductions programmes available – Airside Induction and Contractor Induction.

AIRSIDE DRIVING + VEHICLES

Vehicles may not be driven Airside unless the vehicle has been issued with an Authority for Use Airside (AUA) permit, and the driver has been issued with an Authority to Drive Airside (ADA) licence. Vehicles and drivers that do not hold the required permits/licence, but who have a valid reason to be airside, must be under escort by an appropriately licensed airside vehicle and driver.

AIRSPACE PROTECTION

Airspace around leased Federal airports is protected under the Airports Act 1996 and the Airports (Protection of Airspace) Regulations 1996. The protection of airspace is essential in order to provide a safe and predictable environment for the arrival and departure of aircraft using an airport.

National and international standards have been adopted which define two sets of invisible surfaces above the ground. These surfaces are:

Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS) and
Procedures for Air Navigation Services – Aircraft – Operations (PANS-OPS)

Airside Identification Requirements
Essendon Fields Airport is a Security Controlled Airport that comprises both landside and airside areas.

It is a requirement under the Aviation Transport Security Regulations 2005 (ATSR 2005) that all persons accessing the airside areas of Essendon Fields Airport must have a valid ASIC, or be a passenger under escort of an ASIC holder, or have a Visitor Identification Card (VIC) and be under escort by an ASIC holder.

Essendon Fields Airport is the proud home of the State’s emergency services air wings. From daily surveillance flights to emergency response and seasonal fire protection, the activities of these organisations account for nearly a third of all aircraft movement at our airport.

We’re honoured to be the home base for these airborne heroes, and to help share their stories.

READY TO RESPOND 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK

24-hr access for emergency movements and our proximity to major hospitals plays a major part in making Essendon Fields the vital emergency services hub that it is today.

Over 8,000 annual incidents are attended by Air Ambulance Victoria and the Victoria Police Air Wing alone. Thousands of other emergency flights pass through our airport each year, ranging from medical evacuations, to search and rescue missions and urgent organ transport.
