Wingsuits, also known as wingsuit flying or birdman suits, are special jumpsuits designed to allow experienced skydivers and BASE jumpers to glide through the air, mimicking the flight of birds or flying squirrels. Wingsuits are made of lightweight, airtight fabric that extends from the wrists to the ankles and connects to the jumper’s body with webbing, creating wings or “sails.” The wingsuit’s design includes an inflatable wing between the jumper’s arms and torso, which creates additional lift and surface area. This design enables a wingsuit flyer to generate lift and, to some extent, control their trajectory while in freefall. When a wingsuit flyer exits an aircraft, they experience a brief period of freefall before deploying their parachute. During this freefall phase, the wingsuit allows the jumper to achieve horizontal movement, glide, and cover longer horizontal distances. This is in contrast to traditional freefall where the descent is mainly vertical. Wingsuit flying is an advanced discipline that requires specialized training and experience. Jumpers must have a significant number of skydives or BASE jumps under their belt before attempting wingsuit flight. Safety is paramount, and proper wingsuit training is essential to minimize risks. Wingsuits can be maneuvered by shifting body position and adjusting the angle of attack of the wings. Experienced wingsuit flyers can perform turns, loops, and other aerial maneuvers during their descent. In addition to skydiving, wingsuits are used in BASE jumping (Building, Antenna, Span, Earth). BASE jumpers leap from fixed objects like cliffs, bridges, or buildings, and wingsuits allow them to clear obstacles and extend their horizontal glide. Wingsuit flying has evolved into various disciplines, including proximity flying (flying close to terrain or objects), formation flying (flying in close proximity to other wingsuit flyers), and acrobatic flying (performing aerobatic maneuvers). Wingsuit flyers often use specialized safety equipment, such as an automatic activation device (AAD) that can deploy a reserve parachute in case the flyer cannot do so manually. Wingsuit flying offers a unique and exhilarating experience that allows jumpers to explore the limits of human flight. However, it is important to emphasize that wingsuit flying is an advanced skydiving and BASE jumping discipline that poses higher risks than traditional jumps. Proper training, adherence to safety protocols, and experience are crucial for anyone interested in pursuing wingsuit flying.
