Paraglider Taster Day with Airways Airsports at Darley Moor Airfield

There are several common methods for launching a paraglider, each suited to different conditions and skill levels. Foot Launch or Forward Launch is the most common and basic method of launching a paraglider. The pilot lays out the wing on the ground, facing into the wind. With the lines properly sorted and checked, the pilot inflates the wing above their head by pulling on the A risers while simultaneously jogging or running forward. As the wing gains lift and the pilot reaches a sufficient speed, they can lift their feet off the ground and begin flying. In a reverse launch, the pilot faces away from the wing while holding the risers and lines. As the wind catches the canopy, the pilot turns around to face the wing while simultaneously applying gentle brake inputs to maintain control. The wing inflates behind the pilot, and as it rises overhead, the pilot can start walking or running backward to initiate the flight. Tandem launches involve two people: a pilot and a passenger. The launch procedure is similar to the foot launch, but with the added consideration of the passenger’s safety and comfort. The pilot typically coordinates the inflating and controlling of the wing, while the passenger follows the pilot’s instructions and assists as needed. In a tow launch, a powered winch or vehicle pulls the paraglider into the air. The paraglider is connected to the towline, and as the tension increases, the pilot controls the wing’s inflation and maintains a steady ascent. Once a safe altitude is reached or the desired release point is reached, the pilot releases the towline, and the paraglider transitions into free flight. In some cases, paragliders launch from elevated platforms, cliffs, or mountain slopes. Pilots position themselves at the launch site, prepare the wing, and wait for suitable wind conditions. When ready, the pilot inflates the wing and runs off the platform or slope, utilizing the wind and terrain to gain altitude and start flying. It’s important to note that launching a paraglider requires proper training and experience. Beginners should undergo training with a certified instructor to learn the necessary techniques, safety procedures, and judgment for different launch methods and conditions.
