ATPL training (Airline Transport Pilots License) is the course you need to take, in order to become a professional pilot, such as an airline or cargo pilot. There are two options for ATPL courses: the integrated and the modular route. Modular courses allow you to study and sit exams in your own time, which is perfect for trainees that are still working full-time. Integrated courses are full-time study courses which involve around 6 months of study. To pass the course you have to sit 14 exams, which include Aircraft General Knowledge, Air Law, Flight Planning, General Navigation, Instrumentation, IFR Communications, Mass & Balance, Radio Navigation, Performance, VFR Communications. The pass rate for each exam is 75% and the bulk of the questions are multiple choice. Find a Flight Training Organisation that offers ATPL training here.

An Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) flying course is a comprehensive training program designed to prepare aspiring pilots for a career as airline pilots. The ATPL is the highest level of pilot license and is required by most airlines for their pilots. The duration of an ATPL flying course can vary depending on several factors, including the training program structure, individual progress, and the availability of training resources. However, on average, it can take around 18 to 24 months to complete an ATPL course and become an airline pilot. The Private Pilot License training typically begins with obtaining a PPL, which covers basic flight training, navigation, and flight rules. This stage provides the foundation for further training. The Instrument Rating (IR) training focuses on flying under instrument flight rules (IFR), enabling pilots to operate in adverse weather conditions and fly solely by reference to instruments. The Commercial Pilot License (CPL) stage involves advanced flight training, building upon the skills acquired during the PPL phase. It covers advanced manoeuvres, emergency procedures, cross-country navigation, and multi-engine operations. Multi-Engine Rating (ME) stage focuses on training pilots to operate multi-engine aircraft, which are commonly used in commercial aviation. It includes training on aircraft systems, performance, and handling characteristics. Before obtaining the Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL), pilots must complete theoretical knowledge training. This includes subjects such as aerodynamics, aircraft systems, meteorology, navigation, flight planning, and aviation law. The duration of ATPL theory training can vary but typically ranges from a few months to a year, depending on the training program. The Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) training is designed to develop effective communication, coordination, and teamwork skills in a multi-crew environment. It prepares pilots for flying in a multi-pilot cockpit, which is common in commercial airline operations. After completing the theoretical and simulator training, pilots often accumulate flight experience as required by regulatory authorities. This can involve flying as an instructor, charter pilot, or in other flying roles to gain the necessary flight hours. It’s important to note that the duration mentioned above is a general estimate and can vary based on individual circumstances and training programs. Some factors that can influence the timeline include availability of training resources, weather conditions, scheduling constraints, and individual proficiency. Once all the required training is completed, pilots need to pass skill assessments, written exams, flight checks, and fulfil minimum flight hour requirements set by aviation authorities to obtain an ATPL. After obtaining the license, pilots can apply to airlines and go through their specific selection process before starting their career as an airline pilot.
