AvPay: Connecting Hour Builders with Aircraft Renters Worldwide!

In order to gain your Commercial Pilots License (CPL), you will need to have flown 150 hours as Pilot-In-Command. To reach 150 hours a lot of pilots rent an aircraft and spend a few weeks or months flying between airfields. There are two main ways of renting an aircraft to build your hours – dry leasing and wet leasing. A dry lease is when you rent the aircraft minus the fuel, meaning that you will have to foot the bill each time you need to refuel. A wet lease includes the fuel you need to fly. While you may have to use your card to pay for fuel at different airfields, you will be able to reclaim the amount paid by submitting your receipts to the organisation from which you rented the aircraft. Some flying schools offer hour-building-packages and they can be found on the AvPay Flying School Directory.

The cheapest way for a pilot to build flight hours largely depends on individual circumstances and the options available in their region. Here are a few strategies that pilots often consider building flight hours in a cost-effective manner. Some flight schools or training organizations offer discounted rates for block bookings or prepaid flight hours. Inquire with various flight schools to compare pricing and explore any available discounts or packages. Certain flight schools or aviation organizations offer time building programs where pilots can rent aircraft at reduced rates specifically for the purpose of building flight hours. These programs may involve flying predetermined routes or missions, often in less complex aircraft, to help pilots accumulate flight time more economically. Consider becoming a flight instructor yourself. As a certified flight instructor (CFI), you can earn flight hours while teaching others. This allows you to gain experience, build hours, and potentially earn income simultaneously. Some airlines offer cadet programs where aspiring pilots can join as first officers or second officers. These programs typically require a financial investment upfront, but they provide pilots with the opportunity to accumulate flight hours while working for the airline. Explore volunteer opportunities in the aviation industry. For example, organizations like Civil Air Patrol (CAP) or other non-profit aviation groups may offer opportunities to participate in search and rescue missions, fly humanitarian missions, or support other aviation-related activities. These experiences can help you gain flight hours while contributing to meaningful causes. Joining a flying club or a cooperative ownership program can provide access to aircraft at reduced rates. These clubs often have lower hourly rates for members and may offer opportunities for cost-sharing with other pilots. Some pilots offer their services to ferry aircraft from one location to another. This can provide an opportunity to accumulate flight hours while covering travel expenses or potentially earning compensation for the service. There are online platforms that connect pilots and passengers for cost-sharing flights. While regulations vary by country, some platforms provide an opportunity for pilots to offset the cost of their flights by sharing expenses with passengers. Pilots with suitable endorsements and qualifications can explore opportunities to tow banners or gliders. These activities often involve short flights, which can help accumulate hours more efficiently compared to longer cross-country flights. Some pilots find opportunities to fly for aerial survey companies or aerial photography services. These positions may involve flying specialized aircraft equipped with cameras or sensors to capture images or collect data. While the pay may vary, it can be an avenue to gain flight hours in unique flying environments. Remember, the cheapest option may not always be the most efficient or practical for your specific situation. It’s essential to evaluate the costs, benefits, and feasibility of each option, considering factors such as geographic location, available opportunities, your qualifications, and personal preferences. Additionally, staying connected with aviation communities, networking with fellow pilots, and seeking advice from experienced aviators can help uncover additional cost-effective ways to build flight hours.
