✈ The De Havilland Aircraft Company was founded in 1920 by Sir Geoffrey de Havilland, one of the early pioneers of British aviation. He was not only a designer but also a skilled test pilot, flying many of his own designs. This direct involvement in flight testing was rare for aviation executives.
✈ De Havilland’s Comet became the world’s first commercial jet airliner in 1949, marking a new era in aviation. Though it initially faced setbacks, including catastrophic failures due to metal fatigue, the Comet laid the groundwork for modern passenger jet design and helped the industry understand the importance of engineering for high-altitude jet flight.
✈ The De Havilland Mosquito was one of the most versatile aircraft of WWII and earned the nickname “Wooden Wonder” because it was primarily made of wood. This unique design choice made it lightweight, fast, and easy to produce, and it was used in various roles from bombing to reconnaissance.
✈ The De Havilland Tiger Moth was one of the most popular military training aircraft of all time. First flown in 1931, it trained thousands of Allied pilots during WWII. Its excellent handling and forgiving flight characteristics made it ideal for beginner pilots, and many Tiger Moths are still flown today by enthusiasts.
✈ The De Havilland DH.88 Comet racing aircraft, built for the MacRobertson Air Race from England to Australia in 1934, broke records with its sleek design and advanced aerodynamics. It won the race, completing the journey in just over 71 hours, and showcased De Havilland’s engineering prowess in high-speed aviation.
✈ De Havilland’s use of wood in aircraft design, particularly during WWII, was partly out of necessity due to metal shortages. The Mosquito’s wooden structure was made by laminating layers of birch and balsa, a technique that resulted in a strong, lightweight aircraft and contributed to the Mosquito’s incredible speed and versatility.
✈ De Havilland was an early pioneer in jet technology, creating the De Havilland Goblin jet engine, which powered the Vampire—one of the world’s first jet-powered military aircraft. This experience with jet technology eventually contributed to the development of the Comet.
✈ The De Havilland Vampire became the second jet fighter to enter service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1945. It had distinctive twin booms and a single engine and saw wide use among NATO allies. It was one of the first jets to achieve transatlantic flight in 1948.
✈ In 1960, the De Havilland Aircraft Company was absorbed by Hawker Siddeley Aviation, which marked the end of De Havilland as an independent company. Despite this, many De Havilland designs continued to influence British and global aviation through Hawker Siddeley and, later, British Aerospace.
✈ The De Havilland DH.108 Swallow was an experimental tailless jet aircraft that became the first British plane to be equipped with an ejection seat. This high-speed test aircraft contributed valuable data for the development of supersonic flight, although it was ultimately a dangerous and tragic project.
✈ A separate subsidiary, De Havilland Canada (founded in 1928), became famous for rugged, reliable aircraft like the DHC-2 Beaver and DHC-6 Twin Otter—both of which are still in use today. De Havilland Canada continued independently for years and specialized in short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft that served in remote, rugged locations worldwide.

History of De Havilland Aircraft
De Havilland was a British aircraft manufacturer founded in 1920, in Hertfordshire. Throughout its history, De Havilland produced some very significant aircraft such as the De Havilland Tiger Moth, a two-seat biplane trainer used to train pilots during the Second World War. Between 1931 and 1944, over 8,000 Tiger Moths were built, and the type was replaced by the De Havilland Chipmunk, which remained in service with the Royal Air Force University Air Squadrons and Air Experience Flights until 1996, when they were replaced by the Bulldog. De Havilland also produced the Mosquito, a twin-engine fighter-bomber of part-wooden construction. De Havilland Aircraft was bought out by Hawker Siddeley in 1960, which then became British Aerospace in 1978.
De Havilland Canada was founded in 1928 in Alberta and was set up as a subsidiary of De Havilland Aircraft UK. The De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver first flew in 1947 and is an all-metal, high-wing STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capable aircraft that has principally been used for bush flying.
The De Havilland DHC-3 Otter was designed to be a larger option to the De Havilland Beaver and first flew in 1951. Similar in appearance to the Beaver, the Otter is fitted with a turboprop engine and is much larger.
The De Havilland DHC-4 Caribou is a twin-engine military cargo aircraft that first flew in 1958. A higher-performance version of the Caribou was developed, and in 1964, the twin-turboprop De Havilland DHC-5 Buffalo took to the air.
The De Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter is a STOL capable aircraft that’s typically used as a commuter airline at short, less-accessible airfields such as Barra Beach Airfield in the Scottish Outer Hebrides.
The De Havilland Dash 7 was a four-engine STOL capable regional airliner that was produced from 1975 to 1988. The Dash 7 was ideally suited to shorter airfields such as London City Airport, which opened in 1987.
The De Havilland Dash 8 is a twin-engine turboprop airliner that first flew in 1983. The Dash 8 came in three variants: the Dash 8-100, the Dash 8-200, and the Dash 8-400. Production of the Dash 8 was handed over to Bombardier when it was purchased in 1992.
The De Havilland CHC-515 is a twin-engine firefighting turboprop aircraft that first flew in 1993. The aircraft is currently in service with several countries throughout the world, including France, Greece, and Italy.
While the original De Havilland Aircraft Company no longer exists, its legacy lives on through De Havilland Canada. Founded in 1928, De Havilland Canada continues to design, manufacture, and support a range of aircraft, including the popular Dash 8 series of turboprop airliners. De Havilland Canada is a significant player in the aviation industry, providing reliable and efficient aircraft for both commercial and specialized operations.
