The Valentin Taifun is a low-wing, glass fibre motor glider which was built in Hasfurt, Germany. The aircraft first flew in 1981 and since then over 130 have been built. It seats two pilots in side-by-side configuration and features retractable landing gear which is operated manually by a lever located in between both pilots. The aircraft is powered by an 80 horse power Limbach engine and the wings span 17 metres in diameter. The aircraft is capable of cruising at 120 knots and has a maximum range of 1,250 kilometres. Comparable gliders to the Taifun include the Grob 109 (known as the Grob 109B Vigilant to the Royal Air Force) and the Diamond HK36 Super Dimona. Motor Gliders are ideal for pilots that wish to fly more consistently to new locations, since unlike with conventional gliders, you do not have to rely on thermal currents or other forms of lift to stay aloft. Motor gliders can be operated in the same way you’d operate a conventional aircraft, however care must be taken when taxying these aircraft at airports, since their wingspan is much longer than conventional single engine piston aircraft. Motor Gliders give you the freedom to soar at your own discretion, since once aloft you have the freedom to turn-off the engine and operate the aircraft as a glider. You can also return to the airfield engine-stop. If returning to the airfield engine-stop, it is recommended to position the aircraft upwind, in order to stay within gliding range.
