The Avro Heritage Museum preserves the legacy of Alliott Verdon-Roe & his company A.V. Roe & Co (Avro). Located on the former Woodford Aerodrome near Stockport in Cheshire, the site saw the production of famous aircraft including the Lancaster, Vulcan, Nimrod & BAe 146.
The Avro Heritage Museum is packed with fascinating exhibits & is home to the only example of an all-white Vulcan bomber. There are many activities on offer & things to do to keep all ages entertained. The Museum has a café on site which offers light refreshments & fantastic views of the mighty Vulcan bomber as it stands proudly outside.
The Museum is entirely self-funded, relying on admission fees as its main source of income & staffed by passionate volunteers, many of whom worked at Chadderton & Woodford.

Flight Simulator

The original flight simulator was on a single desk using a Microsoft 2004 software with a combined joystick & throttle.

In 2018 a couple of members & student members, developed the present simulator by upgrading the software to the Microsoft FSX; by adding an additional table it allowed dual controls. A more realistic look to the simulator was achieved with the addition of an aircraft seat, sourced from an actual aircraft, a flight control yoke, rudder pedals & throttle quadrant.

The objective is that through education it gives the visiting public the chance of experiencing simulated flight & receiving instruction about the principals of flight & the relevant control surfaces that operate & control the aircraft. One of the main objectives was to give visitors needing wheelchair access & have mobility issues access to the simulator, this is achieved by the removal of the instructor’s chair & the use of the combined joystick & throttle.

The simulator is able to give an educational & enjoyable experience to all age groups with a little bit of fun as well. Further development of the simulator for future years is a key point in customer experience.

VR Bombing Raid

In September 1943, the BBC made one of the most daring & ambitious reports of World War II.

War correspondent Wynford Vaughan-Thomas & his sound engineer boarded Avro Lancaster ‘F for Freddie’ & stepped into a world where life hung in the balance.

Their destination: Berlin.

Using Vaughan-Thomas’ original recording, the BBC has masterfully recreated this wartime raid as a fully immersive Virtual Reality Experience.

Visitors are transported back through history inside an Avro Lancaster bomber to experience the tension & drama of a wartime bombing raid.

Endure the danger of flak & night fighter attacks on a journey to the heart of Nazi-occupied Europe. Marvel at the bravery shown by the airmen of Bomber Comm& & above all, respect the ultimate sacrifice many of these young men made for our freedom……
