RAF Crosby on Eden 1Historic England have a fantastic new mapping resource that allows you to overlay imagery and line drawings (and other layers such as LIDAR) of areas they have records for. Here’s an example from the former RAF Crosby on Eden that shows some of the WW2 camp layout superimposed on imagery of the modern site of Solway Aviation Museum.
RAF Crosby on Eden 2You can see hangars, camp buildings, the male accommodation area (in the field opposite the museum), AAA gun emplacements and dispersals (our Vulcan is parked on one).

The second picture shows the full extent of the old camp, right up to the female accommodation in Laversdale.

A couple of period posters from the 50s extolling the virtues of what would become known as the Whirlwind. Our S-55 is a US-built Sikorsky example (currently in deep restoration).
