Air Display FAQ
An air display can be something as simple as a low-level flypast of a single aircraft, through to a spectacular with multiple aircraft performing loops, twists and stunts with or without colourful smoke.
Anyone can instruct an air display company to deliver an air show. However, with the complexities of coordinating aircraft, pilots, air traffic control and seeking approval, it is best for amateurs to draw on the expertise of an air display company to get the most out of their event. Most air display companies will then arrange the necessary licences and insurance as well as gain approval from local air traffic control.
Air displays can be the stand-alone highlight of a larger event or part of a full-scale air show. Air displays are also popular at small private events such as weddings, birthdays and corporate parties. An air display is the wow moment at any event and will create lasting memories for all those that attend.
Generally, air displays are held over vast open spaces, which is why you are unlikely to see a complex air display over a built-up urban area. If you have somewhere particular in mind and are unsure it is always best to check with an air display company to see if the area meets the rules.
There will be local laws on legislation and permissions wherever you are planning an air display, however your air display team should know all this and they will usually take care of all the licencing on your behalf.
Air displays are not as expensive as you may think. For a small-scale display at a private event, you should budget around £2,000 depending on the aircraft you would like. As with everything the bigger and more elaborate you go the more budget you should set aside.
An air display does not always need to take place at an airfield. The air display can be brought to the sky space above your event provided it meets the local air traffic control approval.
When selecting an air display company, look for membership to trade associations such as the British Air Display Association (BADA), the European Airshow Council or the International Council of Airshows (ICAS). With membership, the air display company will abide by the codes of conduct of each of these bodies.
