Ireland has been a transformative force in global aviation for over a century, & our vision is inspired by the monumental achievements of the Irish aviators, entrepreneurs & pioneers of the past.

This dates back to John Alcock & Arthur Whitten Brown’s crash-landing in a bog in Galway, after completing the first non-stop transatlantic flight, from North America to Europe, in 1919 – a feat equalled by Commandant James Fitzmaurice & his crew, who took off from Baldonnel Aerodrome & completed the first transatlantic flight, from Europe to North America, in 1928.

Even the creation of the first Irish Coffee is rooted in aviation’s rich history. Joe Sheridan introduced the iconic drink to the world when he served it to an American passenger at Foynes, a flying boat base on the River Shannon in County Limerick, in 1943.

Irish aviation’s impressive momentum continued to build, &, in 1947, the world’s first Duty Free shop was opened at Shannon Airport. What began as a small kiosk staffed by one woman has since grown into the multi-billion-dollar worldwide retail industry it is today.

Tony Ryan founded Guinness Peat Aviation (GPA) in 1975, which went on to become the largest aircraft-leasing business in the world & firmly placed Ireland at the centre of global aviation.

Global business & general aviation has also benefitted from Ireland’s continuous innovation & collaborative work with international agencies & governments. A lasting impact of such progressive collaboration can be found at Shannon Airport, where the world’s first U.S. Customs & Border Protection Preclearance Facility was established in 2010. The facility has evolved impressively over the past decade to provide significant time-saving & efficiency benefits for the wider industry.

Today, among its many other success stories, Ireland has cemented its position as a global leader & top destination for business & general aviation, as well as aircraft leasing & finance. This achievement can be attributed to the vast & invaluable experience that has come from more than 100 years of involvement in the industry.

Playing an Integral Role in Ireland’s Growth
It is our responsibility to honour Ireland’s aviation milestones & many more like them, as we add new chapters to this island’s storied aviation history & carry the torch forward for Irish business & general aviation.

We are fully committed to bringing our business & general aviation industry together as members of one inclusive platform, while encouraging more youth, more entrepreneurs & more of the wider community to enter & grow this sector. Together, we can play a key role in promoting Ireland& building our industry’s reputation across the world.

Why Ireland?
IBGAA is an outward-looking, all-Ireland association; therefore, our role is to promote the island of Ireland as a centre of excellence for business & general aviation, aircraft leasing, charters, & finance. It is vital that we nurture collaboration across our industry & ancillary sectors to further establish Ireland as not just an appealing destination to visit, but also a hub for business & trade in Europe.

As the only English-speaking country left in the EU, we must intensify our collective efforts to capitalise on new opportunities to attract companies who wish to invest & do business in an English-speaking, European location.

In addition to being the home of leading MNCs’ European headquarters & offering one of the lowest corporate tax rates in Europe, Ireland has multiple strategically located national, regional & local airports & can offer efficient & hassle-free travel to & from the USA through Shannon Airport’s CBP preclearance services.

These are invaluable strengths, which equip & empower us to develop Ireland into an international base for business & general aviation, & it is imperative that they are proudly & actively promoted across the globe.

US Pre-Clearance
The U.S. Customs & Border Protection Preclearance Facility enables business & private aircraft to complete the required immigration, customs, & agriculture inspections at Shannon Airport before flying direct to any airport in the USA. The first facility of its kind when it was established in 2010, & still one of only two in the world today, Shannon Airport’s CBP Preclearance Facility has evolved impressively over the past decade to provide significant time-saving & efficiency benefits for the wider industry.

IBGAA recommends coordinating your EINN preclearance with your Shannon Airport ground-handler. They will provide all the necessary information to CBP on your behalf, in addition to updating CBP on any schedule &/or crew/passenger changes. Should your schedule change, & you need to revise a preclearance slot, your ground handler will assist with the revision.
