Aerospatiale was a French aircraft manufacturer which was founded in 1970. The company was state owned and used to build both military and civilian aircraft, ranging from the large Super Puma Helicopter to the supersonic Concorde Airliner. It also produced a range of missiles, space craft and unmanned aerial vehicles. The company was based in Paris until its helicopter division was purchased by the Eurocopter Group in 1992. The Eurocopter Group then subsequently became Airbus Helicopters and is now headquartered in Marignane, France. Airbus Helicopters continues to build helicopters originally produced by Aerospatiale, such as the Aerospatiale AS350 Squirrel which is now designated the Airbus Helicopters H125. Between 1965 and 1979 Aerospatiale worked in cooperation with the British Aircraft Corporation (which later became British Aerospace and then BAe Systems) to produce Concorde, which was a supersonic airliner that operated until 2003. A total of 20 Concordes were produced and operated by British Airways and Air France. Concorde was capable of flying at over twice the speed of sound and its cruise altitude of around 60,000 feet allowed passengers the opportunity to see the curvature of the Earth. Concorde was powered by four Rolls Royce Olympus engines, which were the same as those used to power the Avro Vulcan V bomber. Concorde’s Olympus engines were fitted with afterburners along with powerful reverse thrusters which played a vital roll throughout its  operational history, given Concorde’s fast approach speed. Interestingly the Avro Vulcan had to rely on form drag, air brakes, manual braking and a drag chute to slow down during the landing roll!
