The Boeing Stearman, also known as the Stearman Model 75, is a biplane that was widely used as a military trainer aircraft. The Boeing Stearman was developed by the Stearman Aircraft Company, which was later acquired by Boeing. The aircraft was originally designed as a sports biplane but gained popularity as a military trainer. The Stearman became one of the most iconic military trainers in history, serving as the primary trainer for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) and the United States Navy (USN) during World War II. The Stearman features a classic biplane design, with two sets of wings connected by struts. The biplane configuration provides excellent maneuverability and stability, making it suitable for pilot training. The Stearman has an open cockpit, allowing pilots and trainees to experience the thrill of open-air flying. The lack of an enclosed canopy provides a more immersive flying experience and enhances situational awareness. The Stearman is powered by a radial engine, most commonly the Lycoming R-680 or Continental R-670. The radial engine design provides reliability, easy maintenance, and a distinctive sound. Boeing produced over 8,400 Stearman aircraft between the 1930s and 1940s. The company played a significant role in the production and modification of the aircraft for military use during World War II. The military variants of the Stearman included the PT-13, PT-17, and PT-18, which were used by the USAAC and USN for primary flight training. These variants often had additional features, such as adjustable propellers and blind-flying instrumentation. Besides the United States, the Stearman was also used as a trainer aircraft by other nations, including Canada, Brazil, China, and the United Kingdom. It had a global presence during its operational years. Due to its manoeuvrability and iconic design, the Stearman remains a popular choice for aerobatic displays and airshows. Many privately owned Stearmans continue to thrill audiences with their aerial performances. After its military service, the Stearman found a second life in civilian hands. Many Stearman aircraft have been restored and are now used for recreational flying, air tours, and vintage aircraft events.
