Founded in 1918 after World War I, the English Electric Company Limited (EE) was formed by merging five British companies focused on wartime production of munitions, armaments, and aircraft. EE’s aircraft division made significant contributions to British aviation, with the Canberra jet bomber and the Lightning supersonic interceptor becoming major landmarks. The Canberra, developed in the late 1940s, served as a versatile medium bomber for decades, succeeding the de Havilland Mosquito. The Lightning, operational from the 1960s to the late 1980s, excelled as a high-speed interceptor aircraft, capable of exceeding Mach 2. In 1960, English Electric’s aircraft division merged with Vickers and Bristol to form the British Aircraft Corporation.
