Fairchild Aircraft was an American aircraft manufacturer that was founded in 1925. Throughout the Second World War Fairchild Aircraft produced a number of aircraft for the military, such as the Fairchild AT21 Gunner, which was a twin engine piston trainer used to train bomber crews. Post 1945 the company developed the Fairchild C119 Flying Boxcar, which was a large military transport aircraft that was fitted with a twin boom fuselage, similar to that on the Lockheed P38 Lightning fighter aircraft. The company also manufactured the Fairchild Republic A10 Thunderbolt which is a twin engine, single seat attack aircraft that first flew in 1972. Known as “The Aircraft designed around a gun”, the A10 Thunderbolt is still in service today with the United States Air Force. A year after the Thunderbolt first flew Fairchild Aircraft produced the Fairchild Metroliner, which was a 19 seat turboprop commuter airliner that first flew in 1972. The Metroliner is also known as the Fairchild Metro and several variants were developed including the Fairchild Metro III, Fairchild Metro IV and the Fairchild Metro 23. Fairchild Aircraft acquired Dornier in 1996 and the company got involved in the production of the Fairchild Dornier 328, which was a twin engine commuter airliner that first flew in 1998. The Fairchild Dornier 328 was available as both a turboprop and a jet variant.
