Hawker Siddeley was a British aircraft manufacturer that was founded in 1934. The company encompassed a number of different British aircraft manufacturers such as the Sopwith Aviation Company, Hawker Aircraft, Armstrong Whitworth and the Gloster Aircraft Company. Hawker Siddeley would then become part of British Aerospace in 1977, which then became BAE Systems in 1999. Notable aircraft manufactured by Hawker Siddeley include the HS 125, which was designated the Dominie by the Royal Air Force. The type would then be modified into civilian versions such as the Hawker 400, Hawker 700, Hawker 750, Hawker 800XP, Hawker 900XP, Hawker 1000 and the Hawker 4000. In 1960 Hawker Siddeley flew the Kestrel for the first time, which was to be developed into the Hawker Siddeley Harrier – the world’s first vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) jet fighter bomber. The Harrier entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1969 and in 1982, the Harrier GR3 was instrumental in the Falklands War. The Harrier saw service in the United States Marine Corps, who started operating the Av8A variant in 1971. The aircraft was then improved and in 1982 the AV-8B Harrier was introduced. The latest operational version of the Harrier with the RAF was the Harrier GR7. The Harrier GR9 was being developed by BAE Systems at Warton, however the type never entered service and was retired in 2011. The RAF would be left without a VTOL jet aircraft until 2018 when 617 Squadron at RAF Marham took delivery of their first F35 Lightning IIs. Hawker Siddeley also manufactured the Nimrod, which was a Maritime Reconnaissance and Anti Submarine aircraft that was operated from 1969-2011. The aircraft was developed from the de Havilland Comet,  the world’s first jet airliner. The Nimrod has now been replaced with Boeing’s Poseidon MRA1, which is a variant of the Boeing 737 which first flew in 1967.
