Learjet was a North American private jet manufacturer that was founded in 1962, by Bill Lear. The company is well known for being one of the earliest aircraft manufacturers to develop jet aircraft for private use. In 1963 the Learjet 23 took to the skies and was designed to be a 6-8 seat private jet. The aircraft was developed into the Learjet 24 which first flew in 1966 and had an increased Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW), wing tip tanks to increase range, more powerful engines and an additional window in the right fuselage. Seven months later the longer Learjet 25 was flown and then developed into the Learjet 28, which first flew in 1977 and could carry up to eight passengers. The Learjet 28 was distinguishable from its predecessor in being fitted with winglets, instead of wingtip tanks. The Learjet 29 was the same size as the Learjet 28, but was fitted with wingtip tanks. Ten years later the Learjet 29’s speed and avionics were improved and this became the Learjet 31. Throughout the 1990s a range of super light business jets from competing manufacturers such as Cessna led to the development of the Learjet 45, which first flew in 1995. Capable of carrying up to 9 passengers, the Learjet 45 was developed into the Learjet 45XR which had an increased performance, Learjet 40 which had a shorter fuselage and the Learjet 40XR which had an increased range. The Learjet 60 first flew in 1990 and was an improvement on the Learjet 55, which first flew in 1979. The Learjet 60 featured a longer fuselage and more powerful engines. The largest Learjet produced was the Learjet 75, which was introduced in 2012 and was a development on the Learjet 45. It had upgraded avionics (Garmin 5000), more efficient winglets and more powerful engines. The Learjet 70 is a shorter variant of the Learjet 75 and was introduced in 2013. In 1967 Learjet was merged with Gates Aviation and then in 1990, the company was bought-out by Bombardier. In 2007 the company announced the development of the Learjet 85, however this program would later be cancelled and the production of Learjet aircraft was stopped in 2021.
