Messerschmitt Bölkow Blohm was an aircraft manufacturer from West Germany was founded in 1968. The company was effectively a conglomeration of three German aerospace manufacturers: Messerschmitt AG, Bölkow and the Hamburger Flugzeugbau. Messerschmitt AG was founded in 1938 and produced models such as the Messerschmitt Bf109, which was the Luftwaffe’s primary Single Engine Piston fighter aircraft during the Second World War, until the Focke-Wulff FW 190 came into service. Messerschmitt built the world’s first operational jet fighter (the Me 262 Schwalbe), the world’s first operational rocket fighter (the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet) and the world’s largest glider transport aircraft (the Messerschmitt Me 321 Gigant). Bölkow was founded in 1948 and was a helicopter manufacturer. The Hamburger Flugzeugbau was founded in 1933 and produced a number of flying boats. Probably the most well-known of Messerschmitt Bölkow Blohm’s helicopter models is the MBB Bo 105, which is a twin engine helicopter that saw service in several militaries including the Republic of Korea Army and the Spanish Army. In the 1970s Messerschmitt Bölkow Blohm joined forces with Japanese Kawasaki to develop the MBB/Kawasaki BK 117, which is another twin engine utility helicopter. The BK117 would be developed further into the Eurocopter EC145/Airbus H145. Messerschmitt Bölkow Blohm was bought-out by Eurocopter, which then became Airbus Helicopters in 2014.
