MiG (or Mikoyan Gurevich) is a Russian aircraft manufacturer that was founded in 1939 by Mikhail Gurevich and Artem Mikoyan, just two years before the German invasion of Russia. During the Second World War the company produced the MiG 1 fighter, which was mostly constructed of wood and steel tubing. The aircraft was improved and then designated as the MiG 3 fighter. While over 3,400 MiG 3s were produced, sadly over 1,400 of them were shot down. In 1947 MiG entered the jet fighter market with the MiG 15, which was a single seat fighter that fought during the Korean War of 1950-1953. The MiG 15 proved so effective that the United States Air Force had to expedite the development of the North American F86 Sabre to help combat the aircraft. The MiG 15 was replaced by the MiG 17 in 1952, which was designed to be more stable at speeds closer to the speed of sound. In 1955 the company passed the sound barrier with the MiG 19 and in 1959 development was continued with the MiG 21, which is still in service with several militaries today. The MiG 21 is fitted with a nose cone similar to that on the BAC Lightning, which helps to regulate the speed and the flow of the air entering the engine at supersonic speeds.
