Sikorsky Aircraft is an American helicopter manufacturer that was set-up in 1923 and is headquartered in Connecticut. The company was one of the world’s earliest helicopter manufacturers and pioneered the way in both civilian and military helicopter design. The company was founded by Igor Sikorsky who was born in Kyiv, Ukraine. After developing a series of seaplanes throughout the 1930s, Sikorsky Aircraft rolled-out the Sikorsky R4 helicopter which first flew in 1942. The aircraft was a three bladed, twin seat helicopter that was powered by a powerful radial engine and became the world’s first mass-produced helicopter. While the type was never mass-produced, the Focke Wulf FW 61 is believed to be the world’s first functional helicopter and first flew in 1936. In 1957 the company rolled-out the Sikorsky H5 which was a utility helicopter that had a greater load, range, speed and service ceiling than the earlier Sikorsky R4. The company’s first multi-purpose helicopter was the Sikorsky H19 Chickasaw which first flew in 1948 and was used extensively during the Korean War. The H19 Chickasaw would pave the way in the wartime use of helicopters. The British built a version of the H19 Chickasaw under license and called the type the Westland Whirlwind, which was used by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy, primarily in the Search and Rescue (SAR) role. Sikorsky developed the Chickasaw into the Sikorsky H34 which was also built under license in the UK and became the Westland Wessex, which replaced the Westland Whirlwind in the SAR role. The helicopter was also used by the British Army and put to use in the 1982 Falklands War. In 1953 the company introduced its first heavy lift helicopter, the Sikorsky CH37 Mojave. The Mojave had a range of 126 nautical miles and a Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) of 14,000 kg. The Sikorsky HH52 Seaguard was the company’s first amphibious helicopter and took to the skies in 1958. The type was unconventional in design in that it was fitted with a boat’s hull, to improve the aircraft’s performance on water. In 1961 the company introduced the Sikorsky SH3 Sea King which was a twin turbine engine Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) helicopter that could also hold up to 26 passengers. The Sea King was built under license in the UK and was used to replace the Westland Wessex helicopter. Interestingly the Sea King is also capable of landing on water, thanks to its “boat hull” and large floats which serve a dual-purpose and house the main undercarriage when the aircraft is aloft. The aircraft would remain in service until 2018 when the Royal Air Force retired its Sea Kings from the Search and Rescue role. A number of Sea King helicopters are still in use today with the United States Marine Corps, where they’re used to transport the President of the United States. When the president is being flown by these helicopters their call sign is “Marine One”. The company’s second heavy lift helicopter flew in 1962 and would be designated the Sikorsky CH54 Tarhe. Unconventional in design, the twin turbine engine Tarhe featured a hollow fuselage behind the cockpit, allowing it to transport bigger and heavier loads. The aircraft’s MTOW was 21,300 kg, which is more than twice the weight of a North American B25 Mitchell twin engine bomber! In 1966 the company introduced the mighty Sikorsky CH53 Sea Stallion, which was designed to replace the ageing Ch37 Mojave. The aircraft was designed to be both a heavy lift and transport helicopter and was capable of carrying up to 55 troops. The Sea Stallion was replaced by the Sikorsky MH53 Pave Low which first flew in 1968. When fitted with a large boom on the starboard side the aircraft was capable of carrying-out air-to-air refuelling with aircraft such as the Lockheed Hercules. The type would be developed into the Sikorsky CH53E Super Stallion which took to the air in 1974 and the Sikorsky CH53K King Stallion which flew in 2015. In 1974 the company started producing the renowned Sikorsky UH60 Black Hawk, which was a four bladed twin engine turbine utility helicopter. Over 5,000 have been built and the type is still in service today. The Black Hawk is used by several special forces regiments throughout the world and is also used as a presidential transport helicopter, alongside the Sikorsky Sea King. The Sikorsky S92 was introduced in 2004 and was designed to be a medium lift transport helicopter. Capable of carrying up to 19 passengers, the S92 competed with the Eurocopter AS 332 Super Puma in the gas and oil market and is widely used to transport workers to and from offshore oil and gas installations. The military version of the Sikorsky S92 is known as the Sikorsky CH148 Cyclone. One of Sikorsky’s most popular VIP helicopters is the Sikorsky S76, which is a medium size utility helicopter that can carry up to 13 passengers. In the VVIP configuration the aircraft is fitted to seat either 5 or 6 passengers and competes with the Agusta Westland A109 range of helicopters such as the Agusta A109S Grand and the Agusta A109E Power. Since its first flight in 1977 the type has been developed into the Sikorsky S76A, Sikorsky S76A Utility, Sikorsky S76A+, Sikorsky S76A++, Sikorsky S76 Mark 2, Sikorsky S76B, Sikorsky S76 C, Sikorsky S76 C+, Sikorsky S76 C++ and the Sikorsky S76D. In 2008 Sikorsky rolled-out the Ch148 Cyclone which was designed to replace the Sea King. In 2015 the company was sold to Lockheed Martin who continue manufacturing a range of the former Sikorsky helicopter models.
