Stemme AG is a German motor glider manufacturer that was founded in 1984 by Dr Reiner Stemme. The company is based in Brandenburg and is renowned for making high performance motor gliders that feature retractable propellers that are housed in the aircraft’s nose cone. The company’s first big success was the Stemme S10 which first flew in 1986. The design paved the way for future Stemme models with its side-by-side seating configuration, retractable undercarriage (in taildragger configuration) and retractable propeller. The aircraft had an impressive glide ratio of 50:1 and could cruise at 140 knots. The Stemme S6 then came in 2006 and was fitted with tricycle undercarriage. The aircraft differed from the S10 in that it had a regular (non-retracting) propeller spinner and propeller, which could be feathered when gliding aloft. The aircraft was developed over the years into versions such as the Stemme S8T and the Stemme S8 RT. In 2015 the company announced the Stemme S12 which was a development of the S10 model. Constructed from composite materials the aircraft features winglets, retractable undercarriage, a retractable propeller, is powered by a 115 hp Rotax engine and has a glide ratio of 53:1. Stemme has since developed the S12 into the Stemme S12 SW and the Stemme S12 G. Stemme also produces an Airborne Systems Platform motor glider which is designated the Stemme ASP S15.
