Sukhoi was a Russian aircraft manufacturer that was founded in 1939 by Pavel Sukhoi. The company gained prominence for building the Sukhoi Su 2 light bomber, which was used during the Second World War. The aircraft was slightly similar in appearance to the American Douglas SBD Dauntless. The company entered the jet age with models such as the Sukhoi Su 7 and the Sukhoi Su 9. Nowadays the company is best known for producing the Sukhoi Su 27 jet fighter which first flew in 1977. The aircraft was produced in response to the American F14 Tomcat and the multi-national Panavia Tornado. The carrier-strike version of the Su 27 is called the Sukhoi Su 33 and first flew in 1987. In 1990 the company rolled-out the Sukhoi Su 34 supersonic bomber which is similar in size to the American McDonnell Douglas F111 Aardvark. In 1984 Sukhoi entered the aerobatic market with the Sukhoi Su 26 which won a number of awards at various aerobatic competitions throughout the world. The two seat Sukhoi Su 29 entered the picture in 1991 and started to compete with the German Extra EA 300. The Su 29 was developed into the lighter single seat Sukhoi Su 31 which first flew in 1992 and had an impressive roll rate of 400 degrees per second. In 2006 the company was merged into the United Aircraft Corporation, along with a number of other Russian aircraft manufacturers.
