Vans Aircraft is an American aircraft manufacturer that was founded in 1973 and is currently headquartered in Oregon. The company is best known for its range of high performance RV kitplanes which seat 1-4 occupants. The company is reported to have produced more than 10,000 aircraft and one of its early successes was the Vans RV 3, which was a single pilot, low wing Single Engine Piston (SEP) that was configured as a tail dragger. The aircraft was designed to have a Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) capacity and was capable of aerobatics. The Vans RV 4 took to the skies in 1979 and was a two seat version of the RV 3. The RV 4 would become one of the world’s most popular kitbuild aircraft and can house a range of different engines. The Vans RV 6 then flew in 1985 and comes in two versions: the RV 6 is in the taildragger configuration and the Vans RV 6A is in the tricycle configuration. The RV 6 was then replaced by the Vans RV 7 which first flew in 2001 and featured a greater wingspan, a longer range and improved flight control surfaces. The Vans RV 8 flew in 1995 and was a single seat variant that had a wingspan of 24 feet. The Vans RV 9 arrived on the scene in 1997 and featured a high aspect ratio wing which helped improve the aircraft’s slow speed handling characteristics. Powered by the sporty Lycoming O-235 engine the aircraft can cruise at 189 mph and has a range of 620 nautical miles. The company’s first four seat touring aircraft was the Vans RV 10 which first flew in 2003. Similar in appearance to the Cirrus SR 22 and the Cessna 400, the Vans RV 10 is powered by a meaty 230 hp engine which allows the aircraft to comfortably cruise at 200 mph with a full load of fuel and 100 pounds of baggage. The company entered the Light Sport Aircraft category in 2006 with the two seat Vans RV 12 which has an empty weight of just 340 kg. The Vans RV 14 first flew in 2012 and was an aerobatic two seat aircraft that featured a large bubble canopy, giving both occupants an excellent field of view. The aircraft comes in the tricycle configuration as standard and also features a large baggage area, making it an ideal type for cross-country flying. Vans Aircraft is currently developing the Vans RV 15 which is a high wing, two seat bush aircraft that’ll compete with bush airplanes such as the Cubcrafters Carbon Cub and the Cubcrafters Sport Cub.
