Westland was a British helicopter manufacturer that was founded in 1935 and headquartered in Yeovil, Somerset. During the Second World War the company built models such as the Westland Lysander which first flew in 1936 and was used to transport covert operatives into enemy territory thanks to its excellent Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) capability. In 1938 the company introduced the twin engine Westland Whirlwind which, with four Hispano cannons fitted in the nose, was one of the fastest and most heavily armed aircraft that flew at the start of the war. The Westland Welkin then flew in 1942 and was designed to operate as a high altitude interceptor. After the war the company switched focus towards hovercraft and helicopters and in 1947 started producing the Westland WS 51 Dragonfly, which was the American Sikorsky S51 that was built under license in the UK. In 1953 the company started building the Sikorsky S55 Chickasaw under license and named the type the Westland Whirlwind. The aircraft would be used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) for Search And Rescue (SAR) duties until it was replaced by the Westland Wessex in 1961. The Wessex saw extensive service with both the RAF and the Royal Navy (RN) and was put to use in 1982 during the Falklands Conflict, transporting troops between the British task force fleet and the Falkland Islands. The Westland Sea King took over from the Wessex in 1969 and remained in service with the RAF Search And Rescue until 2018. The Sea King featured a boat’s hull and was fitted with floats on each side that were also used to house the undercarriage when retracted, allowing it to operate from both land and water. In 1960 the company produced the Westland Scout. The Scout was operated by the British Army and was developed into the Westland Wasp which was used by the Royal Navy. In 1967 the company entered a joint venture with the French company Aerospatiale and began to build the Westland Super Puma, which is still in service with the RAF today. The two companies also worked together on the Westland Gazelle which was a five seat turbine utility helicopter, famous for being one of the fastest helicopters in the world. The twin turbine engine Westland Lynx took to the skies in 1971 and saw service with the British Army and the Royal Navy. The Lynx was capable of inverted flight and could carry up to 8 troops. The type was developed into the Agusta Westland AW 159 Wildcat which first flew in 2009. In 2000 Westland merged with Italian manufacturer Agusta, becoming Agusta Westland. The company has since manufactured popular helicopter models such as the Agusta Westland AW 109S Grand, Agusta Westland AW 109E Power, Agusta Westland AW 119 Koala, Agusta Westland AW 139 and the Agusta Westland AW 169.
