The Junkers Ju 88 was a twin engine multi-role combat aircraft that was used by the Luftwaffe as a dive bomber, torpedo bomber, reconnaissance aircraft and night fighters. Designed in the 1930s the aircraft incorporated advanced features for the time such as a streamlined fuselage, retractable undercarriage and a fully-enclosed cockpit.
The Ju 88 had a maximum speed of around 360 mph and a range of approximately 1,550, depending on the bomb load. The aircraft was well-known for its excellent manoeuvrability and versatility and was said to be one of test pilot Hannah Reitsch’s favourite aircraft to fly.
The Ju 88 could carry an extensive bomb load with loads raning from high explosive, incendiary and armour piercing bombs. The aircraft was extensively used as a night fighter, being equipped with radar and armed with both cannons and machine guns. The Ju 88 really was a menace to the British Halifax, Stirling and Lancaster 4 engine bombers.
The Ju 88 saw extensive service throughout the whole war and was deployed in the Battle of Britain, The Russian front, The Mediterranean and over France following the Allied invasion of Normandy.
Over 16,000 Ju88s were built and they even saw service with other countries after the war such as France, Spain and Egypt.
