“Why do you need a certification to fly a drone?”

To answer the question in the simplest answer possible – you need the FAA SUAS Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification to operate a SUAS (small unmanned aircraft system) for all commercial usage. You do not need the certification to operate for hobby use. An SUAS isn’t just a drone or quadcopter, it can also be a fixed wing plane. If you work on a constructino site and you are using an SUAS to take pictures of the site, you are violating FAA regulations (if not certified). No, you aren’t making money from it, but it is being used commercially. The FAA will fine you for operating an SUAS for commercial purposes, if you are not certified.

To become an SUAS remote pilot, you must pass an aeronautical knowledge test at an FAA approved knowledge-testing-centre and undergo a Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) security screening. This certification is renewed every 2 years by taking the aeronautical knowledge test. The test is composed of random questions, ensuring that you’re well-versed in the regulations set forth by the FAA.
