Airfields requiring a Prior Permission Required (PPR) request typically do so for operational, security, or logistical reasons.

Airfields with limited capacity or high traffic volume may require PPR requests to manage the flow of aircraft and ensure proper scheduling, allocation of resources and to ensure their capacity and congestion is safely managed. Airfields located in sensitive areas or with specific security consideration requirements may require PPR requests to screen and vet incoming aircraft and personnel for security purposes. Airfields located near residential areas or sensitive environments may enforce noise abatement measures, including the requirement of PPR requests to monitor and control aircraft movements. Airfields with temporary or ongoing runway restrictions or maintenance activities may require PPR requests to manage and coordinate operations effectively.

Some airfields may require PPR requests to ensure the availability of customised, specific services or facilities tailored to the needs of incoming aircraft, such as customs and immigration services, fuelling, or ground handling. Airfields located in challenging environments, such as mountainous regions or remote areas, may require PPR requests to assess and accommodate the unique operational requirements and limitations of aircraft operating in those conditions. Different airports may have their own management policies and procedures, which could include the requirement of PPR requests as part of their operational guidelines and regulations.

It’s important for pilots and aircraft operators to familiarize themselves with the specific requirements of each airfield they plan to visit. Checking the airport’s published information, Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), or contacting the airport administration or airfield operator directly can provide guidance on whether a PPR request is necessary and how to submit it if required.
