Grob Aircraft is a German aircraft manufacturer that was founded in 1971, in Bavaria. The company has specialised in producing a number of training aircraft for militaries throughout the world, such as the Grob 115E Tutor which is used by the Royal Air Force. The Grob Tutor replaced the Scottish Bulldog in 2001 and is used throughout the UK by University Air Squadrons (UAS), Air Experience Flights (AEF) and Flight Training Schools (FTS). Grob also produced the Grob 109B Vigilant touring motor glider, which replaced the Slingsby Venture in 1991. The Grob Vigilant was used by Volunteer Gliding Squadrons (VGS) throughout the UK such as 635 VGS at BAe Samlesbury, 645 VGS at RAF Topcliffe and 632 VGS at RAF Tern Hill. Grob also produced the Grob 103 Viking, which is a conventionally launched glider still in use by Volunteer Gliding Squadrons today. In 2008 Grob Aircraft filed for insolvency and in 2009 the company’s training aircraft branch was purchased by H3 Aerospace. In 2010 Grob introduced the Grob 120TP, which was an improved version of the Grob 115 that featured a turboprop engine, composite airframe, retractable engine and ejection seats. In 2002 Grob intended to produce the Grob 140TP, which was a 4 seat turboprop that would have competed with Daher’s TBM 850, however didn’t start full production of the aircraft. Other aircraft that didn’t go into production include the Grob GF200, which first flew in 1991 and was intended to be used as a business aircraft. Grob Aircraft also made progress on a twin engine private jet, which first flew in 2005 and was called the Grob G180 SPn.
