Rockwell International was an American aircraft manufacturer that was founded in 1919. The company is known for producing the popular Rockwell Commander 112 which first flew in 1970. The Commander 112 was a four seat all-metal touring aircraft that was fitted with retractable landing gear. The aircraft was quite distinct as it had the elevator located in the middle of the horizontal stabiliser which placed the aerofoil away from the prop wash, reducing the aircraft’s control effectiveness at slow speeds in pitch. The Rockwell Commander 112 could cruise at 160 knots and was continually improved over time into the Rockwell Commander 112A, Rockwell Commander 112B, Rockwell Commander 112TC, Rockwell Commander 112TCA. The Rockwell Commander 114 arrived in 1992 and was also continually improved becoming the Rockwell Commander 114A, Rockwell Commander 114B, Rockwell Commander 114TC and the Rockwell Super Commander. In the 1970s Rockwell International teamed-up with Fuji to built the Fuji/Rockwell Commander 700 twin engine piston transport aircraft, which was powered by two 340 hp Lycoming engines. The Fuji/Commander 710 was fitted with more powerful engines that generated an additional 110 hp. In 1973 when the company merged with American aircraft manufacturer North American, the company was involved with the production of the North American/Rockwell Sabreliner which was a mid-sized business jet that first flew in 1962. Rockwell International also produced a number of successful military aircraft such as the North American Rockwell Ov10 Bronco, which was a twin engine turboprop attack and reconnaissance aircraft. The company also built the supersonic, sweep-wing Rockwell B1 Lancer which was introduced in 1986 and is still in service with the United States Air Force today. Other well-known sweep-wing military aircraft include the Panavia Tornado, the General Dynamics F111 Aardvark and the Tupolev Tu 160 supersonic strategic bomber.
