Schempp-Hirth is a German glider manufacturer that was founded in 1935 and is headquartered in Baden Württemberg. The Company’s first sailplane was the Göppingen Gö 1 glider which was a single seat open cockpit glider that first flew in 1935. With large struts stretching from the underside of the fuselage to the underside of each wing, it was similar in appearance to the two seat Slingsby Sedbergh and the Slingsby Cadet Mark 3 gliders that were used by Volunteer Gliding Squadrons throughout the UK. That same year the company launched the Göppingen Gö 3 which featured an enclosed canopy and had a glide ratio of 28:1. Two years later the company rolled-out the Göppingen Gö 4 which, with two seats in tandem configuration, was used as a training aircraft. During the Second World War the company produced a number of components for military aircraft such as the Messerschmitt BF 109. Following the ban on German aircraft production at the end of the war the company relatively inactive until 1959, when the company started to produce the single seat, aerobatic Schempp Hirth Standard Austria glider. In 1965 came the Schempp-Hirth SHK open class glider, which was an improved version of the Standard Austria. In 1967 the company introduced the Schempp-Hirth Cirrus open class glider, which was a single seat glider constructed of fibreglass. In 1976 the company used components from the Cirrus to create the Schempp-Hirth Mini-Nimbus, which featured a slightly smaller wingspan and first flew in 1976. In 1976 the Schempp-Hirth Janus was introduced as the company’s first two seat high-performance glider and had a glide ratio of 43:1. The type was replaced in 1993 by the Schempp-Hirth Duo Discus. In 1980 the company started manufacturing gliders out of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic and this was used to construct the Schempp-Hirth Ventus. In 1984 the Schempp-Hirth Discus was launched to replace the Standard Cirrus and had an remarkable glide ratio of 45:1. The type was then developed into the Schempp-Hirth Discus 2 which first flew in 1997. The flap-equipped Schempp-Hirth Arcus took to the skies in 2009 and is a two seat high performance glider that’s ideally suited to cross-country gliding and training. Equipped with a T Tail, the glider is similar in appearance to the Grob 103 Viking, which is operated by Volunteer Gliding Squadrons (VGS) throughout the UK such as 632 VGS at RAF Tern Hill and 645 VGS at RAF Topcliffe. The company’s latest glider is the Schempp-Hirth Quintus single seat open class glider which features an impressive wingspan of 23 metres.
