Yakovlev is a Russian Aircraft Manufacturer that was founded in 1934 by Alexander Sergeyevich Yakovlev. The company became famous for producing a number of Single Engine Piston (SEP) fighter aircraft during the Second World War such as the Yakovlev Yak 1 which first flew in 1940. The aircraft’s simple wooden construction made it relatively easy to maintain and repair and was developed into the Yakovlev Yak 3, which flew in 1943. The company also built the Yakovlev Yak 9 in 1942 and the type was used to help combat the threat from the Luftwaffe’s Messerschmitt BF 109 and Focke Wulf FW 190 fighters. The company also built the Soviet Union’s first operational jet fighter, the Yakovlev Yak 15. The company built a number of training aircraft such as the Yakovlev Yak 11, which was a tandem two seat piston that first flew in 1945. The aircraft is similar in appearance to the North American T6 Harvard and features retractable undercarriage. The type was developed into the Yakovlev Yak 18 which flew one year later. The Yakovlev Yak 52 first flew in 1976 and was operated as a primary training aircraft by various militaries throughout the former USSR. In 1975 the company started producing single seat aerobatic aircraft which started with the Yakovlev Yak 50. This was followed by the Yakovlev Yak 54 which flew in 1993 and competed with rival Russian manufacturer Sukhoi’s Su 26.
