While most aircraft sellers aim to conduct honest and transparent transactions, there can be cases where some try to cover-up certain issues with the aircraft. Buyer beware!
It’s essential for buyers to know about any potential red flags, before a transaction comes anywhere near to closing. Protect yourself by carrying-out due diligence and engage the service of an experienced Aircraft Broker, to help identify any issues. Request complete maintenance records and, if any are missing, contact the maintenance facilities that worked on the aircraft, to see if they can shed any light on the aircraft’s past. Carry-out a lien check, to make sure there’s no outstanding finance on the aircraft. Have all the Airworthiness Directives (ADs) been complied with? Are there any signs of concealed damage or repairs that haven’t been documented in the aircraft’s logs? Engage the services of an Approved Maintenance Organisation to look for signs of damage or corrosion. Does the seller hold the title to the aircraft, or are they selling on behalf of the owner? Do they have any hidden motives and do you know why they’re selling? Are there any operating restrictions in place on the aircraft and are all repairs and upgrades compliant? In addition to carrying-out the above, buyers can give themselves additional protection by using an Escrow service to complete their transaction.
