Short Airfield History

Strathaven is the third oldest operational airfield on the west of Scotland mainland – the other two being Prestwick and Glasgow Airports.
It was founded by The Scottish Flying Club in the early 1960s after a decade of searching for a site to replace their former base at Glasgow’s Renfrew Airport.
Gp Cpt George Pinkerton, chairman of the Scottish Flying Club when it bought Couplaw farm in 1964, was the pilot who shot down the first German aircraft over British soil in WW2.
He was still chairman in the 1970s when the airfield was given to the RAF Benevolent Fund so it “would continue to be used for flying”. This is probably why many people think it is an ex-wartime airfield.
Flying clubs based at Strathaven over the years include the West of Scotland Flying Club, Glasgow and Strathclyde University Gliding Club, the Rutherglen Flying Group and the Strathclyde Gliding Club.
The airfield was sold by the RAF Benevolent Fund in 2005 to microlight aircraft instructor Colin MacKinnon, whose Microlight Scotland flying school had been based at Cumbernauld Airport.
The airfield is now back in the hands of the revived Scottish Flying Club – now trading as a not-for-profit company called Strathaven Airfield Ltd – and is being completely refurbished. And we are determined to keep that traditional grass runway flying club atmosphere.

Learn to fly light aircraft-style

Sportflight Scotland Ltd runs the flying school at Strathaven Airfield, offering flying experience gift vouchers for trial flying lessons and flying training for the National Private Pilot’s Licence.

Our fabulous C42 Ikarus is the “sports car of the skies”, and makes a Christmas gift, birthday present or anniversary celebration a memorable flying experience.

If bitten by the flying bug, Sportflight Scotland’s two extremely experienced instructors can help you reach for the skies for your National Private Pilot’s Licence.

You can buy gift vouchers – which can be used for flights in either the light aircraft-style C42. or the traditional microlight flying experiences – direct from the airfield, or online here.

However, Sportflight Scotland offers a full range of flying lesson experiences – all with fully-qualified instructors, so the flying time will count towards your licence.

The £119 Round Strathaven flying experience gives you a unique view of the beautiful and historic market town and the Avon valley.

Or you could be at the controls swooping past the battlements of Bothwell Castle and enjoying the beauty of the Clyde valley from the air with our Classic Flying Experience! Or fly further afield with our Extended Experience – where we’ll cover about 80 miles of ground.

For those with a real sense of adventure, our ultimate gift flight is the Island Land-Away Experience, where we fly over the water and land in the Isle of Bute enjoying the scenery of the Scottish West Coast.

Strathaven Airfield is not suitable for all aircraft types, please visit first and inspect the runways.

While we do not insist on PPR, it is recommended. Please check this web site for any events and phone if you have any questions.

Notes on the runways:

Runway 27: Most pilots aim to touch down just after the threshold to enjoy the smoothest part of the runway.

Caution: touching down earlier will mean crossing the dip between the starter extension and the main runway at speed and may damage your aircraft.

Caution: If there is any southerly component to the wind, some aircraft may be using 23 as well.

Runway 09: Most pilots either aim to touch down at the threshold – the top of the boundary fence is below the threshold level – or else land long and aim to touch down at the intersection of the crosswind runways.

Runway 23: Popular with taildraggers and weightshift microlights when there is a SW component to the wind.

Caution: heavier aircraft may be using Runway 27 at the same time.

Caution: 23 runs uphill with a significant upwards slope to the fence.

Runway 05: Runs downhill and popular with taildraggers and weightshifts in NW winds.

Caution: If landing, beware of fence at threshold and downhill slope.

Caution: Larger aircraft may be using Runway 09

Runway 16: Short and runs uphill. Not recommended for take-offs. Good clear approach over lower ground if landing.

Caution: For take-offs, it is short, runs uphill and has a post and wire fence at the end. Not recommended.

Runway 34: Short and runs downhill. For departures, good clear climbout. Not recommended for landings.

Caution: For landings, it is short, runs downhill and has a post and wire fence at the threshold. Not recommended.
