We are proud of our history of gliding on the Long Mynd, being one of the oldest gliding clubs in the country. Gliders started launching from the west facing ridge of the Long Mynd as early as 1930 and the club was officially founded in 1934. Except for a short cessation of operations during the war the club has operated non stop ever since.
With all year round operation, seven days a week March to November, we offer wave, thermal and ridge soaring for novice and experienced pilots. We run glider pilot training courses throughout the summer and welcome visiting expeditions. First Flight experiences (by prior arrangement) make fantastic presents, especially at Christmas. We have had some notable members during that time including Amy Johnson (the pioneering female pilot), and the Prince of Siam.

On our extensive airfield (about 134 hectares), the club buildings include the hangar, glider workshops, winch garage and workshop, heated parachute storage, battery charging area, a comfortable clubhouse with dining room, TV room, lounge, bar, office, briefing room, and overnight accommodation in centrally heated bunk rooms and private rooms with modern showers and toilet facilities, as well as caravan parking and a camp site.

You do not have to own a glider to fly at the Mynd. The club owns a comprehensive fleet of gliders and use of a privately owned motor glider. Members pay a fixed annual “flying fee” that entitles them to fly any club glider as much as they like, subject to aircraft being fairly shared between other club and course members, with no additional hourly charges other than a launch fee.

Services

Arriving
Please close the gate at the entrance behind you, drive below 15 mph/24 kph (we have a fragile access road) and keep a good look out for aircraft (we land in all directions). Please keep all dogs and children under control. Airfields can be dangerous places for the unwary. Once through the gate follow the road to the car park behind the trailer line. Please do not park in front of the hangar or the trailers.

As a visitor please report to the office first before you do anything. We need to know if you are on site. The car park is behind the trailer line to the south of the hangar. The door to the clubhouse is in the north west corner of the car park next to the hangar. The office is immediately inside the clubhouse. There is additional overflow car parking behind the southern end of the trailer line.

Accommodation
If you have booked accommodation (see facilities for more details) then you will need to collect a key. If you arrive after hours, there is a list on the corridor wall and your room key will be in the door.

Glider Flying at the Midland Gliding Club
Pre solo
We operate under the BGA Requirements and Guidance and have our own training curriculum which will ease you through the club stages. You will be trained in one of our two seater gliders and once solo you will be able to fly one of our single seaters.

Post solo
You will have to prove that you have the required BGA medical qualifications before you will be allowed to fly any of our gliders solo. In addition we ask you to read our Local Flying Rules v22 2016.

Bringing your own glider
Route up to the club
There are three access roads up to the top of the Long Mynd: the Burway from Church Stretton, the road from Ratlinghope and the road from Asterton. The preferred route is Ratlinghope, the Burway is a good second choice. The road from Asterton is extremely steep and you may not be able to restart if you are forced to stop.

Trailer Hitches
We have a few spare hitches, please contact the club beforehand to see if we can reserve a hitch for you.

Instructing at the Midland Gliding Club
If you wish to instruct while at the club then we will take you through a familiarisation process including a ground survey as well as flight considerations.

The Midland Gliding Club offers its members and visitors everything they need to get the most out of our fantastic site and gliding.
For Gliders we have trailer parking with an electric hookup (on application) for de-humidifiers and easy access to water for wings. There is dedicated battery charging for private gliders and dry storage for parachutes and a glider repair and maintenance workshop with a resident inspector and engineer who can perform ARCs, Annuals, repairs, maintenance and refurbishment. Please contact the workshop directly by sending an email here.

For members and visitors we offer a caravan site with electric hookup and water for members’ caravans, and a separate campsite with water and a waste disposal point for tents and visiting motor homes and caravans. The camping area will soon have electric hook ups as well.

Catering all year round. We have a large kitchen and a shared dining area where members and visitors can enjoy superb meals. In the winter we offer a reduced catering facility operating at weekends. However, for clubs wishing to hold a winter expedition then we can also arrange catering during the week. We also have a well-stocked bar and there is always a good selection of ales from local independent brewery The Three Tuns. For more information about catering, email [email protected]

The dining area has a fantastic panoramic window overlooking the rolling Shropshire hills and onwards into Wales.

We have a comfortable club room available for relaxation and briefings/ground school, where we are able to accommodate up to 30 people for briefings or talks

Accommodation. Within the clubhouse we have accommodation of varying grades, from segregated bunk rooms up to full en-suite accommodation. Please check with the office on 01855 650206.

Training and development. We operate under the BGA training organisation and can offer training via our cohort of instructors for early beginners up to advanced cross country. Our training and solo fleet will allow you to learn, fly locally or go cross country.

Met briefings every day to better inform your task decisions.

Briefing room with digital projection.
