The Shuttleworth Collection’s 2022 Talks Programme

2022 sees the launch of a new lunchtime talks programme at Shuttleworth.

Each week, we will specialise in an area of Shuttleworth’s activities that will be of interest to generalists as well as those with a special interest in our areas of expertise.

January 2022

In our inaugural talk, Tim Manna of Kennet Aviation will lift the lid on one of the most audacious aircraft recovery stories in recent times: the rescue of the RAF P-40 Kittyhawk from the Egyptian Desert.

The aircraft crash-landed in mysterious circumstances at the height of the Battle of El Alamein in 1942.  It lay undiscovered for 70 years until it was stumbled upon by an oil worker in 2012.  A rescue mission was commissioned by the RAF Museum & a team of experts from Kennet Aviation, the RAF Museum & local specialist transport was assembled.  Working at night to avoid the searing heat, the team toiled to disassemble the aircraft & work out the fate of its missing pilot, Sgt Denis Copping.

Tim & the team fully documented the recovery & this is the first opportunity in the UK to see his personal records of an incredible rescue mission that raised as many questions as it answered.
