North American Aviation was an American aircraft manufacturer that was founded in 1928 and headquartered in California. The company was famous for building the hugely successful North American P51 Mustang which was designed as a long range single seat fighter during the Second World War. The aircraft first flew in 1942 and was initially fitted with an Allison V1710 engine. Subsequent versions were fitted with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine, which was used to power the famous Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster of the Royal Air Force (RAF). North American also built the B25 Mitchell twin engine bomber, which were launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in April 1942 as part of the Doolittle raid, which was the first time the United States bombed mainland Japan. North American also produced the T6 Texan (named Harvard by the RAF) which was used to train pilots during the war once they had graduated from the Boeing Stearman in the US or the de Havilland Tiger Moth in the UK. Over 15,000 Texans were built and a number are still in airworthy condition today. In 1949 North American were to build on their experience building training aircraft by introducing the North American T28 Trojan, which unlike the Texan was fitted with tricycle undercarriage. In 1949 North American built the formidable F86 Sabre single engine jet fighter, which was used during the Korean War to combat the Russian-built MiG 17 fighter. The company then started developing a Mach 3 strategic bomber and in 1964 the North American XB70 Valkyrie took to the skies. The project was subsequently cancelled. On the other side of the Atlantic another innovative supersonic bomber was shortly to be cancelled too – the British BAC TSR 2, which first flew in 1964. In 1964 the company introduced the North American Sabreliner, which was a twin jet engine mid-size business jet aircraft that could carry up to 7 passengers and remained in production until 1982. In 1967 the company merged with Rockwell Standard and was then sold to Boeing in 1996.
