Cirrus SR22 G1

The Cirrus SR22 G1 launched as the more powerful stablemate to the SR20, sharing the same composite airframe and cabin but stepping up to a 310hp Continental IO-550-N engine in place of the SR20’s 200hp IO-360-ES. That extra power brought a three-blade Hartzell propeller as standard and lifted maximum cruise speed to 180 KTAS at 75 percent power, a useful margin over the smaller model.

Weights grew to match the added performance, with a 3,400 lb maximum gross weight and 1,150 lbs of useful load, supported by 81 gallons of usable fuel. The SR22 G1 was capable of over 1,000 nautical miles of range, giving owners genuine cross-country capability from a single-engine piston.

Cabin dimensions carried over almost unchanged from the SR20, at 130 inches long, 49 inches wide and 50 inches high, since both aircraft were built on the same fuselage. Standard equipment included the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, a multi-function display, dual alternator and dual battery, and electric attitude indication, with buyers able to specify additional avionics including the Avidyne FlightMax EX5000C, dual Garmin GNS 430 navigators and a Sandel SN3308 EHSI.

Optional upgrades available on the G1 included Stormscope lightning detection, Skywatch traffic advisory, TKS-based ice protection and a primary flight display, allowing early SR22 buyers to configure the aircraft to their own mission and budget.

Interesting facts about the Cirrus SR22 G1

✈ The SR22 was launched as the more powerful sibling to the SR20, swapping the SR20’s 200hp Continental IO-360-ES for a 310hp Continental IO-550-N, a jump of over 50 percent in horsepower from the same basic airframe.

✈ That extra power lifted maximum cruise speed to 180 KTAS at 75 percent power, some 20 knots faster than the contemporary SR20, while sharing the same fixed tricycle undercarriage and composite construction.

✈ Standard propulsion came from a three-blade Hartzell propeller at 78 inches in diameter, in place of the SR20’s two-blade unit, better suited to absorbing the IO-550’s extra torque.

✈ Useful load was rated at 1,150 lbs against a 3,400 lb maximum gross weight, with 81 gallons of usable fuel capacity giving the SR22 significantly more range and payload flexibility than the smaller SR20.

✈ Despite the performance step up, the SR22 shared its cabin dimensions almost exactly with the SR20, at 130 inches long, 49 inches wide and 50 inches high, since both models used the same fuselage.

✈ The Cirrus Airframe Parachute System came fitted as standard, continuing the whole-aircraft recovery system that had defined the SR Series since the SR20’s original 1999 launch.
