Piper is an American aircraft manufacturer that was founded in 1927 and is headquartered in Vero Beach, Florida. Piper is known as being one of the Big Three aircraft manufacturers which also includes Cessna and Beechcraft. One of Piper’s early successes was the Piper J2 Cub, which would later be developed into the popular Piper J3 Cub. The Piper Cub was a two seat Single Engine Piston aircraft that sat two occupants in tandem configuration. The aircraft was fitted with a high wing and had excellent Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) characteristics, allowing it to operate from short airstrips and fields. This made the aircraft an ideal candidate for military service and during World War Two Piper produced the Piper L4 Grasshopper, which was a modified Piper J3 Cub used in the medevac, reconnaissance, artillery spotting and transport roles. The Piper Cub is still popular today and manufacturer CubCrafters took on the task of modifying the type into the CubCrafters Carbon Cub, which featured several upgrades. In 1947 the company introduced the Piper PA14 Family Cruiser, which was a 4 seat high wing touring aircraft, similar in appearance to the Piper Cub, but much bigger. In 1948 Piper rolled-out the 2 seat, high wing Piper PA15 Vagabond tail dragger. In the same year Piper purchased rival manufacturer Stinson and adapted the Twin Stinson design, to develop the Piper PA23 Apache, which first flew in 1952. In 1959 the type was developed into the Piper PA23 Aztec and featured more powerful engines along with various improvements to the airframe. Several improvements were made to the Aztec over the years that included more powerful engines, improved avionics and cambered wingtips. In 1949 Piper rolled-out the Piper PA20 Pacer which was an upgraded version of the Piper PA15 Vagabond that could carry an additional two passengers. The following year the Piper PA22 Tri Pacer took to the air for the first time. In 1956 Piper introduced the Piper PA24 Comanche which was a four to six seat, all metal Single Engine Piston airplane that was fitted with retractable undercarriage. Over the years the type would be developed into the PA24 Comanche 180 (180 hp engine), PA24 Comanche 235 (250 hp engine), PA24 Comanche 260 (250 hp engine), PA24 Comanche 300 (300 hp engine), PA24 Comanche 380 (380 hp engine) and the PA24 Comanche 400 (400 hp engine). The type would then be developed into the twin engine Piper PA30 Twin Comanche which first flew in 1962. In 1959 the Piper PA25 Pawnee took to the skies and the aircraft has since been widely used as an agricultural sprayer and glider tug. The Piper Pawnee is similar in appearance to the Air Tractor AT 300. In 1960 the famous Piper PA28 Cherokee arrived on the scene and was brought-out to be a four seat Single Engine Piston aircraft suited to the training and touring roles. Over 30,000 Piper PA28s have since been manufactured, making them one of the most popular training aircraft of all time. Throughout the years various upgrades were made to the type such as the Piper Archer DX, Piper PA28-180 Archer, Piper PA28-181 Archer II, Piper PA28-181 Archer III, Piper PA28R-180 Arrow, Piper PA28R-200 Arrow, Piper PA28R-200 Arrow II, Piper PA28R-201 Arrow III, Piper PA28R-201T Turbo Arrow III, Piper PA28RT-201 Arrow IV, Piper PA28RT-201T Turbo Arrow IV, Piper PA28-161 Cadet, Piper PA28-140 Cherokee Cruiser, Piper PA28-160 Cherokee, Piper PA28S-160 Cherokee, Piper PA28S-160 Cherokee, Piper PA28-180 Cherokee, Piper PA28-180 Cherokee, Piper PA28-236 Dakota, Piper PA28-235 Pathfinder, Piper PA28-201T Turbo Dakota, Piper PA28-160 Warrior, Piper PA28-161 Warrior II, Piper PA28-161 Warrior III. In 1964 the company started manufacturing the twin engine Piper PA31 Navajo, which was a medium sized utility aircraft designed to carry either cargo or up to 9 passengers. The Navajo was then developed into the Piper PA31-350 Chieftain, the Piper PA31TP-350 Mojave and the Piper PA31T Cheyenne, which was a turboprop-powered, pressurised version of the Navajo. In 1963 Piper introduced the Piper PA32 Cherokee Six, which was a stretched version of the Piper PA28 Cherokee that was capable of flying up to 6 passengers. This was then developed into the Piper PA32R Lance and the Piper PA32 Saratoga, which were fitted with retractable gear to increase the aircraft’s performance. As with the Piper PA24 Comanche and the Piper PA30 Twin Comanche, Piper developed the Piper PA32 Cherokee Six into the twin engine Piper PA34 Seneca, which first flew in 1971. The Piper PA34 Seneca has been extremely popular with CPL and ATPL training organisations throughout the world and is currently competing with Diamond’s DA42 Twin Star. As with other Piper models the Seneca has been continually upgraded over the years which resulted in the Piper PA34-200T Seneca II, Piper PA34-220T Seneca III, Piper PA34-220T Seneca IV and the Piper PA34-220T Seneca V which began production in 1997. In 1967 the Piper Aerostar took to the skies and was, at the time, one of the fastest Twin Engine Piston aircraft available on the market. To complete with two seat training aircraft such as the Cessna 152 and the Cessna 150, Piper introduced the Piper PA38 Tomahawk and the type was in production from 1978-1982. Mirroring the Piper PA32 Cherokee Six–Piper PA34 Seneca scenario, the Piper PA28 Cherokee was developed into a twin engine variant which led to the Piper PA44 Seminole taking to the skies in 1976. The type can hold up to 4 passengers and features a distinctive T-Tail. In 1979 Piper rolled-out the piston-powered Piper PA46 Malibu and the Piper PA46 Malibu Matrix which were sleek, 6 seat high performance touring aircraft that were designed to compete with the Cessna P210 Centurion. In 1988 the aircraft’s engine and airframe were upgraded and this became the Piper PA46-350P Malibu Mirage. That same year French manufacturer Socata brought-out the Socata TBM 850 Single Engine Turboprop, so in 1997 Piper swapped the piston engine for a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-42A turboprop engine and the model became known as the Piper PA46-500 Malibu Meridian. Development on the PA46 continued with the Piper M350, Piper M500 and the Piper M600 which compete with the Daher TBM 910, Daher TBM 940 and the Daher TBM 960 Single Engine Turboprop aircraft. In 2010 Piper started building the Czech Sport Cruiser and named the type the PiperSport.
