Interesting facts about the Piper PA-31 Navajo Chieftain

✈ Piper introduced the PA-31-350 Chieftain for the 1973 model year as the stretched Navajo with up to 10 seats and counter-rotating propellers.

✈ The Chieftain uses two 350 hp Lycoming TIO-540-J2BD and LTIO-540-J2BD engines, which reduce critical-engine effects and improve handling.

✈ Piper built the type in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, and later in Lakeland, Florida, with more than 1,800 Chieftains produced during 1973–1984.

✈ Embraer assembled the Chieftain under license in Brazil as the EMB-820C, and some airframes later received turboprop conversions in local programs.

✈ Many late-model Chieftains equipped with full de-ice systems achieved approval for flight into known icing; always verify the individual airframe and equipment.

✈ Operators use the PA-31-350 for air taxi, commuter, charter, freight, and medevac missions thanks to its wide cabin and strong payload.

✈ Standard fuel is four wing tanks with 192 US gal total and 182 US gal usable, with optional wing-locker tanks on some aircraft.

✈ External baggage volume can reach about 63 cu ft using the nose and nacelle lockers, which helps balance payload and range planning.

As of August–September 2025 in the United States, advertised asking prices typically range from about $145,000 to $595,000, with recent averages near $300,000. Airframe time, engine hours since overhaul, avionics, de-ice equipment, and interior condition drive the spread.
